Motion Offense: Dribble Entry Mid-Zone Screen

The Motion Offense provides an opportunity for individuals and teams to develop successive scoring opportunities. The strength in the Motion Offense is that it can be linked to patterns that simplify the complexities of basketball offenses. The Motion Offense Dribble Entry Mid-Zone Screen Play looks to integrate some variations to the offenses standard flow that makes scouting of the play that more challenging for defences.

 

The Motion Offense Dribble Entry Mid-Zone Screen Play starts in a Three Out, Two In formation. This formation provides the greatest spread of players into the half court. The area around the top of the keyway is left vacant to allow interior players especially strong in facing up to the basket a significant amount of room in which to work and create a scoring opportunity.

The Play starts with the ball in the Point Position. One (1) dribbles the ball to either wing. In the scenario depicted One (1) dribbles towards player Two (2).

 

Two (2) seeing the dribble entry being initiated pushes towards the mid-range area along the baseline.

 

Upon seeing the first dribble initiated, Four (4) creates a lead before setting a screen for Five (5). Five (5) flashes up the keyway and into the strong side high post.

 

Once setting the screen Four (4) should seal onto Five’s (5) defender and look for the lob pass across the keyway.

  • Two (2) at Mid-range
  • Five from flash to high post
  • Four (4) on seal

The standard movement for the Motion Offense Dribble Entry Mid-Zone Screen Play is for Two (2) to move into the keyway and set an up screen for Five (5) to then roll ball side towards the basket.

 

Once Four (4) sees Two (2) moving to set a screen the player should pause for a count of “two”. Four (4) will then flash to the High Post position on the split line.

 

Once setting the Screen Two (2) will lift up and out to the Point Position ready or the ball reversal from One (1).

 

Scoring Options

 

  • One (1) from rip and drive baseline
  • Five (5) on roll to the basket
  • Four (4) on lift to the high post
  • Two (2) on step out to three-point line

From this position, the Motion Offense Dribble Entry Mid-Zone Screen Play is now reset to be able to then be activated on the opposite side of the floor.

 

Two (2) reverses the ball onto Three (3).

 

If no pass is received from Two (2), Four (4) then moves to the weak side low post.

 

Five (5) relocates to the strong side low post.

  • Pass into Four (4)
  • High/Low offense between Four (4) and Five (5)

Variation for the Motion Offense Dribble Entry Mid-Zone Screen Play

 

Instead of Two (2) screening up this player can also choose to screen across the keyway for Four (4).

 

Three (3) once seeing Two (2) break the split line lifts into the point position ready for the ball reversal.

 

Four (4) cuts over the screen and flashes towards strong side low post.

 

Two (2) once setting the screen continues to move out to the weak side wing position.

 

The ball if not able to be passed into a scoring position is then reversed through Three (3) and onto Two (2).

 

Five (5) will flash from the high post to the opposite low post.

 

Four (4) will settle into the low post awaiting for the ball to be reversed and the Motion Offense Dribble Entry Mid-Zone Screen Play to start again on the opposite side of the floor.

  • One (1) on rip and drive to baseline
  • Pass into Five (5) at the high post
  • Four (4) on roll to basket
  • Pass to Three (3) for three-point shot
  • Skip pass to Two (2) in isolation
