1000 MPH Recovery Conditioning Drill

The 1000 MPH Recovery Conditioning Drill is a great activity or helping develop a team’s stamina and perseverance. The drill focuses on repeated and constant physical pressure on players to perform the desired skills even under fatigued conditions. As a bye product of this challenge the 1000 MPH Recovery Conditioning Drill provides an opportunity for a team to overcome adversity and develop some ownership over their performances no matter how small the effort based activity.

The 1000 MPH Recovery Conditioning  Drill starts with two lines of players along the baseline.

 

On the whistle of the coach players One (1) and Two (2) run into a close-out to first point and pitter-patter in defensive stance. Depending on your philosophy as a team, the arms can either be in a one up and one down position or both arms out and in line with the shoulder.

 

Upon second whistle players run-slide-run to second point finishing with a close-out again and finish in a defensive stance pitter-patter.

 

On the second whistle as players One (1) and Two (2) are moving to the second position. Players Four (4) and Three (3) move to first point replacing the previous athletes.

 

The player rotation continues up the floor until layers exit the court once reaching the short corner at the opposite end of the floor.

 

The challenge in the activity comes into ensuring each individual player is accountable for their own perfect performance of the desired technical skills. This can be achieved through a number of different rules for the 1000 MPH Recovery Conditioning  Drill.

 

One option is to have the individual player start the cycle again if they fail to perform the technical skills as directed.

 

Another option is to start the whole team again when a player fails to perform the technical skills as directed.

 

Just remember, as a coach there does need to be a balance between failure and achievement. Too much restarting of the activity will disheartening, especially early on when players are looking to push through the physical challenges of the drill.

 

Point of Emphasis

 

Before players start and after finishing those not actively involved on the floor should be cheering their teammates along to the completion of the 1000 MPH Recovery Conditioning Drill.

 

Technique throughout the 1000 MPH Recovery Conditioning Drill needs to be maintained. This includes the close-out by each individual player and the defensive stance once reaching each desired point on the floor.
