Pick and Roll Offense: One Pass On-ball Quick Hitter
The Pick and Roll Offense is a great option for creating good quick hitter options within a very limited amount of time in possession of the ball. The One Pass On-ball Play is one such offense that brings together good offensive principles on a sort timeline. The one pass on-ball play looks to create initial player movement straight out of a team’s primary transition and into an offensive scoring situation. This is achieved with a minimal amount of time wasted or not utilised through indecisive player movement around the half court.
The pick and roll offense has a number of advantages especially in the modern game of basketball with regards to scoring opportunities. A pick and roll offense forces mismatches if executed well, places shooters around the driving and passing lanes and can be executed as a general or specialist scenario offense.
The One Pass On-ball Play as a pick and roll offense brings speed to the table at a premium level. If executed at full pace the One Pass On-ball Play can be run in as little as six seconds from inbound to shot. This very good considering the number of player movements that happen in this time on the offensive end of the floor.
Another advantage to the One Pass On-ball Play is its ability to source the on-ball screen from a number of different areas on the floor. The Four or Five can be involved in the screening action and the mechanics of which happen in two very different ways. This makes scouting more challenging harder an opposition’s defence to anticipate plays outcome.
Four (4) moves off the front of the rim to the low post.
One (1) passes ball to Two (2) and then cuts aggressively to the basket (punch cut).
Scoring options:
- Four (4) on early seal to the rim
- One (1) on punch cut to the rim
As One (1) breaks through the broken circle Four (4) lifts to the weak side elbow.
One (1) moves into weak side long corner.
Five (5) creates lead and then sets screen for Two (2).
As Two (2) dribbles off the screen, Three (3) lifts from long corner to reach the weak side foul line extended.
Five (5) either rolls to the basket after screen or flares to the short/long corner.
Scoring Options:
- Four (4) on cut across keyway
- Two (2) on drive into passing lane
- One (1) from assist by Two (2) after drawing defender
- Three (3) on lift from long corner
- Five (5) in two man game with Two (2)
Variation: Dribble Entry
If the passing entry is not available then players can move through the keyway by using a dribble entry.
One (1) waves Two (2) away to signal the required cut.
Four (4) then sets a back screen the rolls to the basket.
Ball handler must wait until cutter is off of the screen to ensure the passing lane for backdoor cutter is free.
Movement then follows previous offensive motion.
Variation: Four Screens
In the instance where there could be a miss-match with Four (4). Screening action can be performed by the alternative forward.
Movement then follows previous offensive motion.
Five (5) now fills weak side elbow.
